AICC members recently received the entry guidelines for the 2015 Independent Packaging Design Competition in a unique and attractively designed corrugated promotional piece supplied by SMC Packaging Group of Springfield, MO. SMC Packaging Group was one of two companies that won the AICC 2015 Bid for the Promo Competition. The other winning company was Great Lakes Packaging Company.

SMC Packaging Group manufactured and mailed over 400 competition promotional pieces to AICC members. Taking the theme “Big Design Roundup” and considering typical western imagery, the graphic artist created original artwork for the piece to meld the theme of a cattle drive into an outlaw roundup featuring an outlawed bull on a wanted poster. The structure was integrated into the art creating a trouble causing bull inside the folder that is found when the barn door front of the folder is opened. The natural qualities of the corrugated are exposed in this design to create texture combining print with labeling with purposely imperfect lines.

The design was a collaboration of many leaders and designers throughout their locations. Jeff Woods lead the challenge team which consisted of, Structural Designers; Matt Cato, Patrick Long, Brad Buckle, Alan Miller and David Gilchrist and Graphic Designer, Stacy Sheppard.

The piece was printed on natural Kraft material through a rotary press, labeled via an Automatän automatic labeler and die-cut on an IMG Eterna Matrix Flatbed Cutting Press. They also used Corrugated material that is produced in-house on their Fosber 98” Corrugator.
